Taman Sari is a cultural heritage site of the Yogyakarta Palace which we can still see standing proudly. Taman Sari was built during the reign of Sri Sultan HB I, in 1758. To date, Taman Sari Palace has undergone several renovations so that it looks attractive without losing its historical value. Taman Sari is located about 300 meters west of the Yogyakarta Palace.
One of the beauties of Tamansari Yogyakarta is that it has a water pool surrounded by a 6-meter-high fortress. In ancient times, Tamansari was used to bathe the wives of Sultan HB

When you enter the gate, you will see a picture that tells about Tamansari’s condition in the past. At that time, it could be seen that there used to be an orchard of fruit that the Sultan could pick every day. These fruits include watermelon, pineapple mango and others. Taman Sari at that time was very cool and fresh because there were still many trees growing there.
We can no longer find the natural beauty and freshness of Tamansari in the past because many settlements have been established in this place by residents. The residents who live around Taman Sari Yogyakarta are said to be relatives of palace servants who have been hereditary for generations.
The Sultan built Taman Sari Yogyakarta after the signing of the Giyanti agreement in 1755, before which there was a split between the families within the palace itself which ended with the splitting of Mataram into 2 parts. Sultanate of Yogyakarta and Kasunanan of Surakarta. The establishment of Tamansari was intended to provide peace of mind, rest, and recreation for the Sultan and his family.
Apart from that, Tamansari was also prepared as a means of fortification in facing the kingdom’s enemies. The architect of the building is from Portugal so the style of the Taman Sari building is in the style of European architectural art, however, the Javanese symbols that are highlighted here appear more dominant.
Tamansari Yogyakarta was built as a royal garden complex consisting of bathing pools, water canals, rooms, and a large pool. The buildings at Tamansari Yogyakarta consist of:
- The sacred part of Taman Sari Yogyakarta is a slightly isolated building that was once used by the Sultan and his family for meditation or hermitage.
- The section of the bathing pool used to cleanse by the Sultan and his family consists of two pools separated by a multi-story building. The water that comes out of the animal-shaped fountain is decorated with large pots.
- The part of Ylang Island consists of several buildings, namely Cemeti Island, Gumulih Well, and underground tunnels.
- Cemeti Island or Kenanga Island is a tall building that is used as a place to rest and as a lookout point. This building is the only one that will be visible when the water canal is opened and water will fill the Kenanga Island area. When viewed from above, this building resembles a lotus flower in the middle of a fairly large pond.
