Museum Sonobudoyo

The Sonobudoyo Museum is one of the tourist attractions that is of interest to both domestic and foreign tourists. This high level of visits cannot be separated from the location of this museum which is not far from the Yogyakarta Palace and Fort Vredeburg.

Structurally, the Sonobudoyo Museum is an agency under the Regional UPT at the DIY Culture Service. Apart from that, this museum has the function of managing museum objects that have scientific and cultural value, including collection development and cultural educational guidance. The Sonobudoyo Museum also has the task of collecting, caring for, carrying out research, library services, cultural educational guidance and presenting collection objects.

The existence of the Sonobudoyo Museum is closely related to the colonial foundation, namely the Java Institute, which was concerned with Javanese, Madurese, Balinese and Lombok culture. This institution was the forerunner to the establishment of the Sonobudoyo Museum which was inaugurated by Sri Sultan HB VIII by marking it with the Candrasengkala Kayu Winayang Ing Brahmana Buddha.

The Sonobudoyo Museum stands on land gifted by Sri Sultan HB VIII marked by the candrasengkala, Buta Ngrasa Estining Lata in 1865 Java or 1934 AD. The inauguration of this museum was opened by Sri Sultan HB VIII on Wednesday Wage, 9 Ruwah 1866, Java, marked by the Candra Sengkala Kayu Kinayang Ing Brahmana Buddha, which means Javanese year, or to be precise, 6 November 1935 AD.
Entering the Japanese occupation era, this part of the museum functioned as a Social Office for Teaching by (Regent Paniradyapati Wiyata Praja), after Indonesia’s independence its function was changed to the Office of the DIY Government (Regent of Cultural Utorodyopati Prawito).

The management and function of this museum building continue to change. At the end of 1974, the Sonobudoyo Museum was handed over to the Central Government / Department of Education and Culture and was directly responsible to the Directorate General with the enactment of Law No. 22 of 2000 concerning the authority of the Government and the authority of the Province as Regional Autonomy.

Starting from January 2001, the Sonobudoyo Museum joined the DIY Provincial Culture and Tourism Service and proposed to become UPTD Regional Regulation No. 7 / Yr. 2002 Date. 3 August 2002 concerning the formation and organization of UPTD in Regional Services within the Provincial Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and Governor’s Decree No. 161 / Th. 2002 Date. As one of the museum tourist destinations with a high level of visits, the Sonobudoyo Museum has ten types of collections from across scientific disciplines, namely, Types of Geological Collections, Types of Biological Collections, Types of Ethnographic Collections, Types of Archaeological Collections, Types of Numismatics/Heraldic Collections, Types of Historical Collections, Types of Philological Collections, Types of Ceramological Collections, Types of Fine Arts Collections and Types of Technological Collections.
